Ministries of Health and Sport collaborating to implement National Sport Policy and Strategic Plan

In a significant step towards enhancing public health through sport, the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Sport are collaborating to finalise the implementation of the National Sport Policy and the accompanying Strategic Plan.

This initiative aims to integrate health and wellness considerations into sport development and activities, thereby promoting physical well-being among athletes and the general population.

Prime Minister Dr. Terrance Drew, St. Kitts and Nevis’ federal Minister of Health and the CARICOM lead on health matters, has been a strong advocate for proactive measures to reduce the impact of non-communicable diseases in St. Kitts and Nevis.

“My government has an unwavering commitment to strengthening the national health system and addressing the current health priorities. The strides we have taken to enhance our health infrastructure and health services include fighting non-communicable diseases (NCDs).

“In St. Kitts and Nevis, the fight against NCDs is real. The Ministry of Health has scaled up its health education, health promotion and health screening activities, along with the adoption of new treatment guidelines,” PM Drew disclosed.

The inclusion of the Ministry of Health as a key stakeholder in the National Sport Policy and Strategic Plan underscores the critical link between sport and public health. This collaboration will ensure that health considerations are at the forefront of sport development initiatives which will, in turn, foster a healthier and more active nation.

Minister of Sport, Samal Duggins, has also expressed his belief in the transformative power of sport and recreation and has lobbied for inter-ministerial and stakeholder support.

“Cross sectoral support is critical as it relates to our people’s future. While assuring you of my Ministry’s full support for the full implementation of the National Sport Policy and the Strategic Plan, we must garner the support of other line Ministries and stakeholders,” the Duggins said.

The Commonwealth Secretariat and UNESCO have been long-standing partners of St. Kitts and Nevis in forging this initiative to significantly reduce the impact of NCDs.

The push for this collaboration is timely as it aligns with the government’s commitment to transforming St. Kitts and Nevis into a sustainable island state.
