Trinidadian artiste and entourage shot in St Maarten

Avisiting performer is fighting for his life at a hospital in St Maarten after he and members of his entourage were shot and wounded.

The St Maarten Police Force (KPSM) reported that the artist had performed at a concert in the Maho area on Sunday morning and was leaving in a black minivan with his entourage when multiple gunshots were fired at them.

KPMS said the artiste is in critical condition at a hospital in the Dutch overseas territory, while a woman and three men are in serious but stable condition.

St Maarten Police did not reveal the artiste’s name, however, multiple local outlets on social media said the injured performer was a Trinidadian.

Police are also investigating the presence of off duty police and immigration officers in the security detail of the injured artiste.

The territory, which measures 34 square kilometres, has witnessed a surge in gun crimes in recent months.

Earlier this month, Sabine Arrindell, wife of Oualichi Movement for Change leader Olivier Arrindell, was fatally shot when assailants attacked her and her husband.

Four suspects have been held in connection with the incident.
