Troy Nisbett, the 15-year-old swimming sensation from St. Kitts and Nevis, made history at the Paris Olympics by becoming the country’s first Olympian in a sport other than athletics and the youngest ever to represent the nation.
Competing in the 50m freestyle, Nisbett finished fifth in his heat with an impressive time of 28.71 seconds.
This performance not only set a new national record, but also marked a personal best for the young athlete.
Despite his remarkable achievement, Nisbett narrowly missed out on advancing to the semi-finals.
At the Olympic level, only the fastest recorded times across all heats – the top 16 for semi-finals or top eight for direct finals – secure a spot in the next round. Typically, the fastest swimmers are placed in the last few heats, making it challenging for earlier heat winners to progress.
Nisbett’s breakthrough performance at such a young age sets a strong foundation for a promising future, especially looking ahead to the 2028 Olympics.
His participation and success in Paris highlight the potential for diversifying St. Kitts and Nevis’ representation in various Olympic disciplines and serves to inspire future generations of athletes.
