Fifteen-year-old Aaliyah Weekes has been named to the Cricket West Indies (CWI) preparatory squad, currently competing in England, as part of the build-up to the Under-19 Female Cricket World Cup scheduled for early 2025.
This selection marks a significant milestone in Weekes’ young cricketing career as it will provide her with a valuable opportunity to secure a place on the regional side’s final roster for the upcoming World Cup.
Aaliyah’s cricketing journey has been exciting. Having participated in various local and regional developmental sessions, she has consistently impressed coaches and selectors with her all-around skills, particularly her prowess in bowling.
Her talents were on full display when she represented the Leeward Islands in the recently held Regional U19 tournament where she solidified her reputation as a rising cricket star.
Notably, Weekes has already begun making history as she is the first female member of the St. Paul’s Cricket Club. She has garnered immense support from her community as the residents of St. Paul’s have rallied behind her, celebrating her successes and eagerly anticipating her future accomplishments.
Minister with responsibility for Sport, Samal Duggins, has also showered praise on Aaliyah for her hard work.
“Your dedication and passion continue to inspire a new generation of female athletes who dare to break barriers and redefine what is possible. The entire nation stands with you,” Minister Duggins said in a statement.
As Weekes competes in England, her journey serves as an inspiration to young athletes across the Caribbean, especially girls who aspire to excel in cricket. Her inclusion in the CWI preparatory squad is a testament to her talent, determination, and the bright future that lies ahead for her as a cricketer.
