St. Kitts is set to host the 2024 Eastern Caribbean Volleyball Association (ECVA) U21 Beach Volleyball Championships from 30th August to 1st September at the Marriott Beach. The tournament is expected to attract the region’s top junior beach volleyball talents.
The prestigious event will see 13 teams from 11 countries compete for a place in the FIVB Beach Volleyball U21 World Championships, scheduled for July 2025 in Georgia.
This marks the second consecutive year that St. Kitts and Nevis has been chosen as the host nation for EVAC, reflecting the country’s growing prominence in the sport.
The expansion of the tournament, with an additional country participating, underscores the increasing importance of beach volleyball in the eastern Caribbean and ECVA’s dedication to nurturing young athletes.
St. Kitts and Nevis will field three male and three female teams, taking advantage of the privilege extended to the host country. These teams embody the country’s commitment to developing its young athletes and providing them with opportunities to compete at an elite level while fostering their personal growth.
“We are excited to once again host this remarkable event and to offer our young athletes a platform to showcase and further develop their skills. We are confident that this experience will contribute not only to their sporting prowess but also to their overall growth as individuals,” said ECVA president, Glenn Quinlan.
Joining St. Kitts and Nevis in the tournament are teams from Antigua and Barbuda, Dominica, St. Lucia, Grenada, the British Virgin Islands, St. Eustatius, Saba, Bermuda, St. Vincent and the Grenadines and Anguilla.
In addition to the Beach Championships, 30 regional representatives from several participating countries are benefiting from the FIVB Beach Volleyball Coaches Course, which began on 26th August. It is also being held at the Marriott Beach and culminates on 31st August.
The coaches’ course, along with an athlete training camp, are being facilitated by Professor Rick Bevis of Canada, a FIVB Instructor and expert in the Pedagogy of Coaching and Educational Sport Psychology from Vancouver Island University.
Each of the events – the Championships, Coaching course and Training camp – is possible through the support of key partners, including the FIVB (International governing body for volleyball), NORCECA, and Olympic Solidarity via the St. Kitts and Nevis Olympic Committee (SKNOC) and the St. Kitts Nevis Anguilla National Bank (SKNANB).
Minister of Sport, Samal Duggins, while rallying the local community to support the championships, noted that this is an indication of the benefit of sport tourism and how it can transform St. Kitts and Nevis.
