The Dominica Meteorological Service has upgraded a 6am flood watch to a flood warning for Dominica as of 9am to noon today as a tropical wave is affecting the country.
A flood warning means that flooding is already occurring or will occur during the warning period.
According to the meteorological service, “Moisture and instability ahead of the axis of a tropical wave located east of the Lesser Antilles are expected to spread scattered showers and thunderstorms across the area today.”
Rainfall is estimated at two to four inches, with higher amounts possible in elevated and eastern regions, the advisory said.
“This could result in life-threatening flooding, landslides and falling rocks,” the advisory warned.
Forecasters predict a reduction in moisture levels this afternoon however, overnight into Thursday an increase is anticipated.
The meteorological service is urging residents in areas prone to flooding, landslides and falling rocks to exercise caution, particularly during Wednesday morning.
It is anticipated that the island’s waterways will overflow their banks causing flooding of surrounding areas. Weather conditions may also cause landslides and fallen rocks.
The advisory urged residents and motorists, particularly those in areas prone to flash flooding or near rivers and streams, to remain vigilant throughout the warning period.
