Suriname investigates discrimination and extortion against Indians

The Ministry of Defence in Suriname says it has launched an in-depth investigation into allegations of discrimination and extortion of Indians by members of the Military Police (MP).

In a statement, the ministry also criticised persons circulating information provided by a vlogger of the incident at the Johan Adolf Pengel Airport without any formal confirmation.

“These negative statements not only damage the image of Suriname, but also the Immigration Service,” the ministry said in the statement.

While it gave no date when the incident occurred, the ministry said that Defence Minister, Krishna Mathoera, has called in the Inspector General of the Armed Forces (IGK) to be part of the investigation into the allegations of discrimination and extortion by the MP, who are part of the Immigration Service.

It said that a few days ago, a known travel vlogger published a video on his YouTube page, “in which he made serious accusations against the MP and made very negative statements about various matters in Suriname.

”The initial investigation has already shown that the information shared is incorrect. However, the case is being further investigated by the IGK,” the ministry said, adding that it also “regrets that third parties have taken over the information from this vlog without requesting a response”.
