The Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force (RSCNPF) has disclosed another significant gun and ammunition seizure in an operation that took place last Friday.
Police, in collaboration with soldiers from the St. Kitts Nevis Defence Force (SKNDF), seized the weapon and bullets during a routine patrol in the Nisbett Settlement area of Newcastle, Nevis.
Authorities reported that a concealed white plastic bag was discovered which contained a semi-automatic pistol, a magazine, and 16 rounds of ammunition.
No arrests have been made in relation to this discovery.
Just over a week earlier, on 2nd October, police executed a search warrant in Nevis where they confiscated a Glock 40 pistol, a magazine loaded with 14 rounds of 10mm ammunition, and a quantity of cocaine. As a result, six charges were brought against Shavere Hanley of Hamilton and Kylah Wallace of Bath Village.
The police, supported by the army, has increased patrols nationwide in response efforts by National Security Minister, Prime Minister Dr. Terrance Drew to reduce the climbing homicides and improve citizen security.
Earlier this year, the prime minister made it clear that his Labour administration will move sternly to arrest the incidence of violence and crime in the country.
“I am warning everyone…there will be constant vehicular checks and searches. There will be constant searches of the homes of gang members, their partners and affiliates. We will be relentless in our suppression of criminal activities. These are the measures that are necessary to not only locate the persons involved in destructive criminal activities, but remove their firearms and weapons off our streets,” said Prime Minister Drew.
“Those involved in criminal activities can no longer feel comfortable, in their homes, in their gathering spots, nor moving around the Federation. Not only will the Police Force and Army be on our streets, but the Joint Security Operation Tactical Team (JSOTT) will be strategically patrolling hotspots.”
On 6th September, 2024, the Drew-led government amped up its efforts to combat crime and increase citizen security with the launch of the 90-Day Campaign Against Crime and Violence From A Public Health Perspective. Since then, a number of ongoing consultations have been staged nationwide. As part of the campaign the government has adopted an all of society approach in which all stakeholders – the public, civil society, all political parties – have been invited to partner with the government to come up with lasting solutions to solve the issues of crime and violence in St. Kitts and Nevis once and for all.
