The Dominica Labour Party (DLP) will host its delegates conference on November 10 and the current leader of the party, Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit says he expects to retain his position.
Following the DLP’s national council meeting in Salybia over the weekend, Skerrit spoke to stated-owned DBS radio where he announced that there is currently no vacancy for the leadership position of the party, and he expects to be re-elected in that position unopposed.
“I have no doubt that I will emerge [winner] and I have no doubt that it will be uncontested,” he said.
“There is no vacancy now; the prime minister is in place and ofcourse at the appropriate time whenever there will be the need for a new leader there will be a peaceful and seamless transition,” he added.
Skerrit has held the position of party leader of the DLP for two decades now. During the campaign for the last General Election in 2022, he announced his intention to step away from active politics by April 2025. However, he says for now, the party desires to keep him as leader.
“Those who were present at the national council meeting very well made it very clear the party’s direction at this time. What happens tomorrow or next year, year after next is a matter for that but as of the delegate’s conference coming up, we don’t expect there will be any contest,” he stressed.
Prime Minister of St Lucia, Phillip J. Pierre has been announced as the guest speaker of the upcoming delegates conference.
Among the items on the agenda is the ratification of a new constitution for the DLP as well as the unveiling of a new party flag.
