The Ministry of Youth Empowerment, Ageing, and Disabilities celebrated the Month of Older Persons with a lively Sports and Fun Day on 15th October at the Frigate Bay Lawn. Seniors from across the Federation participated in various activities, including lime and spoon races, sack races, dominoes, water exercises, and more, in an event that promoted health and community spirit.
The Sports and Fun Day is one of several activities planned throughout October to honour the elderly community in St. Kitts and Nevis, in line with the global theme for this year’s International Day of Older Persons: Ageing with Dignity: The Importance of Strengthening Care and Support Systems for Older Persons Worldwide.
Lyncia Dore, Coordinator of the Seniors Enrichment Programme, emphasised that this year’s celebration aims to promote healthy living for seniors, ensuring they age with respect and dignity.
The celebration began on 1st October with a Church Service at Lighthouse Baptist Church in Sandy Point. The next major event on the calendar is the Seniors March, scheduled for 25 October, 2024. The march will see seniors proudly walking through the streets of Basseterre, accompanied by younger generations, including primary school students, in a show of intergenerational unity.
Later in the month, from 28-30 October, a Paint and Sip experience will bring together members of the Senior’s Day Programme and students in various communities including St. Peter’s, Newtown, St. Paul’s, Ottley’s, Lodge, Cayon, Tabernacle, and Sandy Point. This creative event offers a fun and relaxed atmosphere for seniors to engage with the youth.
The month’s celebrations will conclude with the highly anticipated 2nd Annual Senior’s Prom on 2nd November at the St. Kitts Marriott Resort. This elegant evening gives seniors the chance to dress up, dine, and enjoy an unforgettable night of entertainment, turning back the clock in a fun and festive setting.
In addition to these social events, a series of consultations have also been held throughout the month to gather the perspectives of seniors on crime and violence. Their input will be integrated into the 90-Day Campaign on Violence and Crime, aimed at creating a safer environment for all citizens and residents.
The Month of Older Persons continues to highlight the importance of celebrating and supporting the elderly population, ensuring they remain active, respected, and valued members of society.
