The Ministry of Sustainable Development, Environment, Climate Action, and Constituency Empowerment is marking October as the “Month of Sustainability,” with a focus on inspiring residents to adopt more sustainable lifestyles to help combat climate change and global warming.
Throughout the month, the Ministry aims to raise awareness about the crucial role that individuals can play in reducing environmental harm. From promoting eco-friendly habits to highlighting national efforts, the campaign is designed to encourage community engagement and collective action.
Permanent Secretary Shez Dore-Tyson emphasised the importance of showcasing the Ministry’s work, which centres around implementing the United Nations’ 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the Sustainable Island State Agenda (SISA), and broader climate action initiatives. These efforts are made possible through collaboration among the various departments within the ministry, including the Environment and Climate Action units, the Parks and Beaches Unit, and the Solid Waste Management Corporation.
Dore-Tyson outlined several ongoing initiatives, such as media tours and strategic planning sessions, as well as a legislative review of the National Physical Development Plan. This plan focuses on sustainable land management across key sectors like agriculture, housing, water, and energy, ensuring that the island’s natural resources are protected for future generations.
As part of the month’s activities, Dr. Joyelle Clarke, Minister of Sustainable Development, highlighted the Federation’s commitment to sustainability during a recent address at the Hamburg Sustainability Conference. She underscored the importance of Saint Kitts and Nevis’ efforts to transition towards a more sustainable future.
“We are committed to ensuring that our island, our people, and our culture remain on a path towards sustainability,” Minister Clarke stated. “Our vision includes clean and uninterrupted water supply, increased local food production, renewable and affordable energy solutions, circular economic growth, and sustainable tourism practices. We are also focused on ensuring that our infrastructure can withstand the impacts of climate change and intensified natural disasters.”
The ministry’s month-long celebration aims to foster greater understanding of sustainability and drive action across the nation. By prioritising environmental health, resource management, and climate resilience, St. Kitts and Nevis government hopes to lead the way in securing a sustainable future for generations to come.
