Celebrating the Golden Years: Seniors March for Recognition in St. Kitts

As October draws to a close, the streets of Basseterre echoed with the voices of seniors proudly advocating for their invaluable contributions to society. On 25th October 2024, a spirited parade marked one of the final activities of this year’s Month of Older Persons, with participants showcasing placards that underscored their continued role in national development.

Organised by the Ministry of Youth Empowerment, Ageing and Disabilities, the march commenced at Greenlands and made its way to Independence Square. This event not only highlighted the strength and vitality of the older generation but also served as a reminder to the community of the wealth of experience they possess.

The Month of Older Persons is grounded in the observance of the International Day of Older Persons on 1st October. This year’s global theme, “Ageing with Dignity: The Importance of Strengthening Care and Support Systems for Older Persons Worldwide,” resonated throughout the various activities held in St. Kitts.

The celebrations kicked off with a church service at Lighthouse Baptist Church in Sandy Point, followed by a Sports and Fun Day on 15th October at Frigate Bay Lawn, featuring engaging games such as sack races and dominoes.

Notably, alongside the celebrations, a series of consultations were conducted throughout October to gather seniors’ insights on crime and violence. This initiative is part of a broader 90-Day Campaign on Violence and Crime led by the Citizen Security Secretariat, aimed at creating a safer environment for all citizens and residents.

As the month progresses, seniors are set to enjoy a delightful Paint and Sip experience from 28th to 30th October, collaborating with school students in St. Peter’s, Newtown, St. Paul’s, Ottley’s/Lodge/Cayon, Tabernacle and Sandy Point.

The festivities will culminate with the highly anticipated 2nd Annual Seniors’ Prom at the St. Kitts Marriott Resort on 9th November. This enchanting evening promises to transport senior citizens back in time, allowing them to dress elegantly and revel in an atmosphere filled with joy and entertainment.

Through these activities, the Government of St. Kitts and Nevis reaffirms its commitment to honouring and supporting its older citizens, recognising their essential role in the fabric of society.

As the celebrations come to an end, the message remains clear: the voices of seniors matter, and their contributions are invaluable to the nation’s future.
