The Eastern Caribbean Central Bank (ECCB) has announced an upcoming redesign of the Eastern Caribbean (XCD) currency, celebrating influential figures from the Eastern Caribbean.
This change was disclosed following the 109th meeting of the Monetary Council, held virtually on 18th October, 2024.
Building on the style of the ECCB’s 40th anniversary EC two-dollar note, the new $100, $50, $20, $10, and $5 bills will feature dual portraits, each highlighting two remarkable individuals from the region.
According to the Council’s official communique, the redesigned $100 note is anticipated to be released by the end of 2027, with the other denominations rolling out as current supplies are used up.
The shift towards featuring regional icons began in July 2023, when the Monetary Council agreed to replace the image of the late British monarch, Queen Elizabeth II, with renowned ECCU nationals.
The current $2 commemorative note, introduced last year, features cricket legend, Antiguan and Barbudan national hero, Sir Vivian Richards,, setting the stage for this new era of currency.
With ten prominent Eastern Caribbean figures expected to be honoured across the new notes, the redesign is part of a larger effort to recognise the rich legacy and contributions of the people of the Eastern Caribbean Currency Union.
