Cabinet Approves Adjusted Omnibus Fare Structure for St. Kitts

The Government of St. Kitts and Nevis has approved an adjustment to the omnibus fare structure, marking the first change in more than 16 years.

After extensive analysis by the Traffic Safety and Public Service Drivers Board, the revised fare increase—capped at a maximum of XCD $1.00—will take effect from Monday, 18th November, 2024 at 12:01 a.m.

In approving the adjustment, Cabinet weighed multiple factors, including inflation rates, operational expenses for omnibus operators, available concessions, and the potential financial impact on commuters, particularly minimum-wage earners. While analysis indicated that higher fare increases could be justified, the Board limited the adjustment to strike a balance between commuters’ financial capacities and operators’ needs to sustain their businesses.

“The decision reflects careful consideration of both the cost pressures faced by operators and the financial realities for passengers,” a statement from the Cabinet noted, recognising the role of public transport in providing affordable and reliable commuting options.

The fare adjustment comes after a comprehensive consultation process, involving input from the Bus Associations, Ministry of Trade, Ministry of Tourism, Ministry of Communication, the Police, Public Works, and other stakeholders. This collaborative effort was essential in reaching a consensus that aligns with the needs of the community.

The Traffic Safety and Public Service Drivers Board expressed gratitude to all parties involved, emphasising that the cooperation and understanding shown during the consultation were vital to the decision. 

“Our commitment remains firm in supporting a sustainable, safe, and reliable public transport system,” the Board noted, adding that dialogue with stakeholders will continue to address future challenges.

This change aims to ensure that the public transport sector in St. Kitts and Nevis remains accessible to all and is positioned to meet the demands of the coming years.
