During a press conference last Thursday, 31st October, 2024, Minister of Tourism Marsha Henderson, announced that the Federation is on the brink of a landmark achievement in its tourism sector. With the commencement of the 2024/2025 cruise season, St. Kitts and Nevis is projected to welcome over 1 million cruise passengers, marking a significant 22% increase in arrivals compared to the previous year. This milestone reflects the ministry’s unwavering commitment to fostering growth, innovation, and collaboration within the tourism industry.
Minister Henderson highlighted that this impressive projection is a direct result of strategic initiatives implemented since the Dr. Terrance Drew-led government took office in 2022. Under her leadership, the ministry has focused on enhancing St. Kitts and Nevis’ appeal as a premier Caribbean destination known for its cultural richness, warm hospitality, and dedication to sustainability.
“This is an exciting milestone for us and underscores the effectiveness of our long-term strategies to make St. Kitts a must-visit destination in the Caribbean,” she stated. “Our aim extends beyond merely increasing visitor numbers; we strive to ensure that every guest enjoys a unique experience that also generates substantial economic benefits for our communities.”
In alignment with the government’s vision for a sustainable island state, Minister Henderson emphasised that her ministry is actively promoting sustainable tourism practices. This commitment was recently demonstrated by signing the Glasgow Declaration on Climate Action in Tourism, which aims to reduce the sector’s carbon footprint while safeguarding the Federation’s natural beauty and cultural heritage for future generations.
“The achievement of this milestone is part of a broader vision,” Minister Henderson remarked. “We are building a tourism industry that is resilient, inclusive, and sustainable. Our focus is not only on high visitor numbers but on fostering an authentic Kittitian experience that strengthens our local economy and preserves our heritage.”
Several factors contributing to this record-breaking projection were discussed by Minister Henderson, including enhanced partnerships with major cruise lines and ongoing improvements at Port Zante. She acknowledged the vital support from Carnival Corporation and Royal Caribbean in boosting St. Kitts and Nevis’ visibility as a cruise destination.
To accommodate the anticipated influx of visitors, the ministry has collaborated with local agencies to enhance guest experiences on the island. New initiatives at Port Zante now showcase a blend of traditional and contemporary Kittitian and Nevisian culture through live performances and locally crafted products, ensuring visitors leave with lasting memories.
Kelly Fontenelle, CEO of the St. Kitts Tourism Authority, expressed confidence in St. Kitts’ unique offerings.
“St. Kitts presents an exceptional combination of pristine landscapes, rich cultural heritage, and unmatched hospitality. These attributes are attracting more cruise visitors than ever before.”
Since her appointment, Minister Henderson has championed policies that not only elevate tourism but also yield long-term benefits for St. Kitts and Nevis. Her leadership has garnered multiple international accolades, including recognition as Caribbean Journal’s Tourism Minister of the Year.
“We are not stopping here,” stated Minister Henderson with determination. “Our ultimate goal is to establish St. Kitts as a year-round destination with an unparalleled visitor experience.”
With the winter tourist season upon us, she remains optimistic about sustaining this momentum, foreseeing tourism as a crucial driver for economic growth in St. Kitts and Nevis.
