In a significant move reflecting solidarity with Cuba, St. Kitts and Nevis has joined the global call for an end to the longstanding economic embargo imposed by the United States. The resolution, backed by the Federation’s Ambassador to the United Nations, aligns with statements made on behalf of several regional and international organisations, including the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC), the Non-Aligned Movement, and the Group of Seventy-Seven and China (G77).
Highlighting the importance of its partnership with Cuba, H.E. Dr. Mutryce Williams, St. Kitts and Nevis’ Permanent Representative at the UN, recalled Prime Minister Dr. Terrance Drew’s compelling remarks during the UN General Assembly 79th General Debate. Dr. Drew stated, “The embargo that has isolated Cuba for decades is illegal and continues to be a stain on our collective conscience. Instead of denigrating Cuba, we should elevate it and learn from its sustainable solutions that have empowered their people, and in turn the Caribbean region.”
Ambassador Williams further reiterated the Federation’s position, emphasising that the embargo, which has persisted for over sixty years, is a major barrier to Cuba’s economic advancement and the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals.
“This outdated embargo remains the biggest impediment to Cuba’s normal economic growth and development, impairing its efforts to modernise and exacerbating the impact of global challenges on the nation,” she noted.
According to a report from the United Nations Secretary-General, Cuba has incurred significant losses due to the embargo, suffering damages estimated at approximately $5 billion USD from March 2022 to February 2023. This figure equates to nearly 19.2% of Cuba’s gross domestic product (GDP) for 2022 and represents 59% of the country’s total exports for the same year.
Despite the challenges posed by the embargo, Cuba has continued to contribute positively to St. Kitts and Nevis, particularly in the areas of education and healthcare, reinforcing the ties between the two nations.
The resolution to end the embargo received overwhelming support, with 187 nations voting in favour, marking a united stance against the economic sanctions affecting the Cuban people. The Government of St. Kitts and Nevis remains steadfast in its commitment to advocating for the complete abolition of the embargo and stands in solidarity with the Cuban nation during this pivotal time.
