The Department of Youth Empowerment has officially launched Youth Month 2024, running from 1st to 30th November, with the inspiring theme, “Mental Health Matters for Youth Development and Sustainability.” This month-long initiative promises a variety of engaging activities aimed at fostering community involvement and supporting the nation’s young people.
The festivities commenced with the annual Youth Art Exhibition, opening tonight at the Department of Youth’s Office in The Cable Building. Under the theme “Exploration of Kittitian Culture through a Variety of Lenses,” this exhibition features the artistic expressions of local high school students. The showcased artworks explore diverse themes such as shattered experiences, bacchanal celebrations, bittersweet memories, and rural life.
“I urge the public to visit us throughout November to appreciate the hard work these young artists have put into their creations,” stated Sahira Joseph, Director of Youth Empowerment.
Following the art exhibition, the celebration will continue with the esteemed “25 Most Remarkable Teens” event on 6th November, recognising the 13th cohort of outstanding young individuals since the programme’s establishment. Culinary fans will be treated to the Chef Competition at the Marriott Dome on 12th November, featuring the finalists from the recent cook-off contest competing for the coveted grand prize.
On 14th November, the Minister’s Youth Forum will take place, where Honourable Senator Isalean Phillip, Minister of State for Youth Empowerment, will interact with secondary school students across St. Kitts and Nevis. This event will also involve the Counselling Unit and the National Drug Council, promoting important discussions around mental health awareness.
A new initiative, “Pyjama Talks,” is set to launch on 16th November, providing a supportive environment for teenagers aged 13 to 16 to engage in meaningful discussions about mental health.
“We recognise that many young people struggle to articulate their feelings. This evening will delve into those challenges with the guidance of professional counsellors,” explained Director Joseph, encouraging parents to visit the department’s Facebook page to register their teens for this vital programme.
In recognition of the International Day of the Child on 20th November, the department will honour students through its StarBoy and StarGirl Programme, a successful initiative introduced last year.
The month will conclude with the Annual Youth Service Reception on 28th November, a gathering to express appreciation to sponsors and volunteers who have supported various initiatives throughout the year.
Additionally, Youth Month will introduce the Youth Christmas Wish initiative, in collaboration with The Cable, aiming to spread joy during the festive season. Director Joseph called on the public to stay tuned for an upcoming commercial that will outline how to support less fortunate children by selecting their names from a Christmas Tree, ensuring smiles on Christmas morning.
Youth Month 2024 promises to be a vibrant celebration of Kittitian culture and a powerful platform for youth empowerment and mental health awareness in the community.
