New Passport System Launches, Temporary Halt on Applications Begins 5th November

The Ministry of National Security has announced a major upgrade to the Federation’s passport system with the rollout of new, highly secure national passports as part of the 4th Generation Border Management System. The updated passports, now machine-readable, incorporate advanced technological features designed to enhance security and streamline border management, the Ministry confirmed in a press release.

As part of the transition to the new system, the Ministry states that all passport applications submitted under the current format must be completed by tomorrow (Tuesday, 5th November, 2024). After this deadline, there will be a temporary halt on processing new passport applications for the remainder of the week, from 5th November through 8th November, except in cases of emergency.

This transition also includes the introduction of a new passport application form, which will take effect alongside the upgraded system.

“We acknowledge that this transition period may cause temporary inconvenience, but we are confident that the new system will greatly benefit our citizens by providing more secure and efficient travel documentation,” the release stated.

The Ministry of National Security emphasised its commitment to making travel safer and more convenient for citizens and expressed appreciation for the public’s patience during the transition.

The updated system promises to bolster border security and expedite the travel process for citizens once it is fully operational, aligning with the government’s ongoing efforts to strengthen national security and improve the efficiency of travel documentation.
