Global Entrepreneurship Week Set to Empower Local Businesses and Aspiring Entrepreneurs

The Ministry of Small Business and Entrepreneurship is poised to celebrate Global Entrepreneurship Week (GEW) from 17th to 22nd November, highlighting the power of entrepreneurship to drive inclusive economic growth. Under the theme “Entrepreneurship is for Everyone,” the ministry has crafted a week of events aimed at empowering small businesses, fostering networking, and inspiring future entrepreneurs.

Assistant Secretary Leah Craig-Chatterton underscored the Ministry’s commitment to the theme, saying, “This week, celebrated around the world, shines a spotlight on small businesses and their essential role in communities. We want everyone to know that entrepreneurship can be a path for anyone.”

A highlight of the week will be a Youth Parliament session on 19th November, organised in collaboration with local youth organisations like Skanaipo and the St. Kitts National Youth Parliament Association (SKNYPA). The session will feature a debate focused on updating the 2009 Small Business Development Act, an effort reflecting the need for legislation that addresses the current realities and challenges facing businesses today.

Craig-Chatterton noted, “Pre-COVID policies need to evolve, and we are committed to reform that meets the times.”

SKNYPA President, Hassani MacDonald, shared his enthusiasm for the partnership, noting the importance of youth perspectives in shaping policy.

“This is an opportunity for us to contribute ideas to adapt the Act to today’s climate and to look ahead,” MacDonald stated. “Our youth parliament committee, led by Mauriel Knight, has crafted an amendment bill that we’re excited to debate, giving the Ministry valuable input from the next generation of entrepreneurs.”

The GEW event schedule includes:

  • November 17: An opening empowerment service at the Rivers of Living Waters Christian Centre, gathering the community for a positive start to the week.
  • November 18 & 21: Downtown pop-up days to promote local shopping, connect with business owners, and gather feedback.
  • November 20: The Entrepreneur Exchange Summit and Awards Ceremony at the Royal St. Kitts Hotel, where successful entrepreneurs will share insights through fireside chats and live podcasts, followed by a ceremony honouring local business achievements.
  • November 22: A networking mixer, in collaboration with Brandon Cranston of ASAP Creative Group, at the Royal St. Kitts Hotel. This event invites small business owners, entrepreneurs, and future business leaders to connect and share ideas.

Craig-Chatterton also announced that nominations for the Small Business Awards are now open, encouraging the community to recognise outstanding businesses.

“We’re looking to honour those who make a significant difference in our economy and communities,” she said.
