St. Kitts and Nevis captivated visitors at the 2024 Taipei International Travel Fair, held from 1st to 4th November, as the Embassy of St. Kitts and Nevis showcased the nation’s vibrant carnival traditions, Sugarmas and Culturama. With lively music, colourful costumes, and energetic performances, the booth highlighted the unique cultural spirit of the twin-island Federation, drawing strong interest from local and international visitors.
“We’ve found that the Taiwanese people are genuinely interested in the sights and sounds of our carnivals, especially the vibrant costumes, lively dances, and captivating music,” shared His Excellency Donya L. Francis, Ambassador of St. Kitts and Nevis to Taiwan. “This year, our theme of Sugarmas and Culturama allowed us to share the richness of our festival traditions and create a memorable experience for attendees.”
Building on last year’s rainforest-themed booth and previous displays centred on beaches, this year’s focus on carnival brought a new dimension to the Federation’s presence at Taiwan’s largest professional travel exhibition.
The highlight of the fair came on 2nd November, when a group of St. Kitts and Nevis nationals staged “Saint Kitts and Nevis Folklore Galore,” a lively showcase of the Federation’s traditional performances. The act included steelpan music, popular local songs, and masquerade dancing, alongside a choreographed Sugarmas and Culturama dance routine. Their vibrant display earned the group the coveted Best Performance Award for the second consecutive year, a prestigious recognition presented during the closing ceremony on 4th November. Ambassador Francis accepted the award on behalf of the performers, expressing gratitude for their commitment to representing St. Kitts and Nevis.
The Taipei International Travel Fair provided an invaluable platform for introducing St. Kitts and Nevis as a travel destination, strengthening ties with Taiwanese visitors and encouraging cultural exchange. The Embassy extended its gratitude to the Taiwan Ministry of Foreign Affairs, whose support helped bring the event to life, and to the nationals and Embassy staff for their dedication.
Ambassador Francis concluded, “The award underscores the talent and cultural pride of our people, and we are thrilled to see St. Kitts and Nevis continue to shine on this international stage.”
