Prime Minister Urges Citizens to Utilise Sanitation Assistance Programme for Improved Living Standards

In an impassioned address at a recent event, Prime Minister Dr. Terrance Drew urged residents to register for the government’s Sanitation Assistance Programme (SAP), an initiative aimed at enhancing public health by eliminating pit latrines across St. Kitts and Nevis. This programme, he stated, not only brings modern sanitation to homes but also elevates the dignity and well-being of the nation’s most vulnerable citizens.

The Sanitation Assistance Programme, administered by the National Housing Corporation (NHC) in partnership with the Ministry of Human Settlement and the Department of Constituency Empowerment, seeks to provide free bathroom facilities for households without access to indoor sanitation. The Prime Minister stressed that SAP is part of the government’s commitment to ensuring every citizen has access to basic amenities that reflect St. Kitts and Nevis’s high standing in the Caribbean.

“This programme is truly transformative for our nation,” Dr. Drew remarked. “Our goal is to eliminate pit latrines, ensuring our citizens live in conditions befitting a country of our status. St. Kitts and Nevis is a high-income nation, highly ranked in CARICOM, and it is essential that our infrastructure reflects that.”

Dr. Drew shared his personal motivation behind SAP’s launch, recounting an encounter in Keys Village in 2013 with a resident who relied on a plastic bag for his sanitation needs.

“Seeing that level of hardship was heartbreaking,” he recalled. “It was unthinkable that in modern St. Kitts and Nevis, anyone would live under such conditions. This programme ensures that no citizen has to endure such indignities ever again.”

Prime Minister Drew also commended the NHC for its dedicated work, noting that while SAP is not a profit-generating venture, it is essential to the agency’s mission of serving the community.

“This programme exemplifies why NHC exists,” he said. “The work they do through SAP is invaluable and demonstrates the spirit of public service that drives us forward.”

With the programme gaining momentum, Dr. Drew encouraged all citizens lacking proper bathroom facilities to apply, highlighting the government’s ongoing commitment to a safer, healthier, and more equitable society. Through initiatives like SAP, he noted, the government aims to build a future where every citizen can live with dignity, pride, and security.
