Department of Marine Resources to Mark World Fisheries Day with Week of Activities

In honour of World Fisheries Day on 21st November, the Department of Marine Resources (DMR) in the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Marine Resources, has organised a week-long celebration dedicated to recognising the vital role of oceans and fisheries in supporting food security, local economies, and community livelihoods.

This series of events, running from 17th to 24th November, is part of the DMR’s ongoing commitment to sustainable marine practices and appreciation for the hard work of local fishers who contribute significantly to the Federation’s food supply and economy.

This year’s World Fisheries Day theme, “Healthy Oceans, Sustainable Fisheries,” underscores the importance of clean, biodiverse oceans for sustaining fisheries and feeding communities. Throughout the week, the DMR will engage with the public and stakeholders to foster awareness about marine conservation, promote community involvement, and celebrate the dedication of local fishers.

Celebrating Fishers and Sustainable Marine Practices

Through this series of events, the Department of Marine Resources will recognise the contributions of local fishers and underscore the Dr. Terrance Drew-led government’s commitment to sustainability and marine conservation. By promoting the responsible use of marine resources and educating the public on sustainable practices, the DMR hopes to foster a culture that values and protects the rich biodiversity of the Caribbean Sea.

As nations around the world mark World Fisheries Day, St. Kitts and Nevis stands out for its proactive approach to addressing marine sustainability challenges and advocating for the health of its oceans.
