Prime Minister and Federal Minister of Health Dr. Terrance Drew expressed his pride as he observed a groundbreaking live surgical procedure at the Joseph N. France (JNF) General Hospital, streamed in real-time to the Marriott ballroom for attendees of the 12th Annual Conference of the Caribbean Society of Endoscopic Surgeons earlier today, 14th November, 2024.
“This is historic for St. Kitts and Nevis and represents a significant, revolutionary advancement in our healthcare delivery,” Prime Minister Drew stated, applauding the progress in local healthcare services.
Dr. Drew credited the success of this milestone to the Dr. Joylette Woodley-Fassale and Dr. Mark Grant, whose collaboration with the Caribbean Society of Endoscopic Surgeons, the Ministry of Health, and the Prime Minister’s Office made this achievement possible.
The prime minister remarked on the importance of hosting such a prestigious event which underscores the Federation’s rising status in the field of advanced medical care in the Caribbean.
The Drew administration’s commitment to healthcare upgrades continues with other significant initiatives. In partnership with the Republic of China (Taiwan), the government has announced plans for a new climate-smart Joseph N. France Hospital. This facility, designed to withstand climate impacts, will be a centrepiece of the government’s sustainable healthcare vision.
“This new hospital is more than just a building; it represents a commitment to sustainable, quality healthcare for our people,” Dr. Drew stated, further highlighting the administration’s push for resilience and innovation.
Other advancements include a new MRI building scheduled to open in early 2025, a recently upgraded lobby at the existing JNF Hospital, and the introduction of triage staff to improve patient experience by reducing wait times.
With the recent launch of endoscopic and colonoscopy procedures and the planned addition of laparoscopic surgery, the Federation is enhancing its medical services to meet the needs of citizens and residents. With the launch of the new climate smart JNF Hospital, Dr. Drew has indicated this will allow the Federation to also diversify the economy further through medical tourism.
Hosting the Caribbean Society of Endoscopic Surgeons conference marks a proud moment for St. Kitts and Nevis. The event reflects the Caribbean region’s confidence in the country’s healthcare infrastructure and services and the Drew administration’s goal of positioning the Federation as a leader in medical innovation and quality care.
