Prime Minister Dr. Terrance Drew and Minister of Public Works, Konris Maynard, took to the field this week to assess the progress of the St. Peters Main Road Rehabilitation Project, a key initiative aimed at enhancing transportation and connectivity for one of St. Kitts’ fastest-growing communities. Accompanied by the project’s contractor, Alexis Hazel of Rock and Dirt, the leaders reviewed the advancements in a project that represents a significant commitment to national infrastructure improvement.
The St. Peters Main Road, which connects the bustling St. Peter’s area to Basseterre and other communities, serves as a vital link for residents and commuters. As the population in St. Peters continues to expand rapidly, the need for a well-developed road network has become increasingly urgent. The government prioritised the rehabilitation of this main artery to accommodate growing traffic, improve safety, and increase accessibility.
Expressing satisfaction with the project’s progress, Prime Minister Drew, who is the Parliamentary Representative for St. Peter’s, highlighted the project’s importance.
“I am very pleased with the advancements made on this massive undertaking,” he remarked. “This road leads to the fastest-growing area in St. Kitts and one of the largest outside of Basseterre in terms of population. Not addressing this road would stifle the movement of people, affecting their lives in many ways.”
The prime minister also reassured residents that the project remains on schedule despite some concerns about perceived delays, emphasising that it is a substantial effort that requires time and precision.
Minister Maynard elaborated on the complexity of the project, underscoring the detailed planning involved in its initial stages.
“At the start, we did all of the work that you don’t see because the design of roads takes a tremendous amount of time,” he explained.
From analysis to underground infrastructure considerations, the project’s scope has required careful attention to detail. Sidewalks, drainage systems, and retaining walls have all been incorporated into the plan, with paving set to be the final step in the construction process.
The project spans from the Robert L. Bradshaw International Airport roundabout to Ogees, focusing on upgrading road surfaces, drainage, and pedestrian pathways to meet the area’s growing needs. Once completed, these enhancements will ensure a safer, more efficient commute for all road users.
Recognising the temporary inconvenience caused by construction, Prime Minister Drew called for understanding and patience from the public, assuring that the final outcome will be worth the wait.
“I want to apologise for the inconvenience, but they would understand that to get such a massive project done would require some inconvenience and some patience,” he said. “I am confident that, once completed, residents will be immensely proud of the collaborative efforts that have brought this project to life.”
The government’s commitment to upgrading national infrastructure remains steadfast, with the St. Peters Main Road project a symbol of this vision. By fostering sustainable development and enhancing quality of life, this initiative underscores the administration’s dedication to building a modern, connected, and resilient nation.
