The Government of St Kitts and Nevis is making significant strides towards addressing the nation’s housing needs, in line with its Sustainable Island State Agenda. This initiative, one of seven key pillars in the Dr. Terrance Drew administration’s commitments to citizens, focuses on sustainable settlements, with housing solutions at its core.
In a collaborative effort to advance housing plans, the Ministry of Sustainable Development, the National Housing Corporation (NHC), and the Ministry of Human Settlement, under the special land distribution initiative, recently convened a stakeholder meeting. This session, supported by Cabinet, included key partners such as the St Kitts Electricity Company (SKELEC) and the St. Kitts Water Services Department. It is part of a series of meetings aimed at finalising the costing and infrastructure development for the NHC’s Smart Homes Programme.
Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of Sustainable Development, Shez Dore-Tyson, confirmed that the ministry is dedicated to ensuring housing solutions are delivered, particularly for those in urgent need. The initiative seeks to streamline construction efforts, ensuring smooth and efficient project rollouts across the Federation.
The Federal Cabinet has also lent its full support to the housing programme, committing to the provision of essential infrastructure for new developments. The first phase of construction will take place across several subdivisions, including Sandy Point, Sea Breeze Manor in Lodge Village, the Racecourse Housing Development in Newton Ground, and Stapleton.
With these developments, the government aims to provide modern, sustainable housing options for its citizens, reinforcing its commitment to improving living standards and fostering sustainable communities nationwide.
