Press Release: Government & Civil Society Unite in Fight Against Crime

St. Kitts and Nevis’ Collaborative Approach to Tackling Crime Gaining Momentum

The Government of St. Kitts and Nevis, through the Citizen Security Secretariat, continues to make strides in addressing crime and violence by forging partnerships with civil society. The latest evidence of this collaborative effort is the ongoing 90-Day Campaign Against Crime and Violence, a government led, community-driven initiative aimed at fostering togetherness and trust across the nation.

One of the highlights of this initiative is the Unshackled Youth Wave 2024, organised by the St. Kitts Seventh-day Adventist (SDA) Youth in collaboration with the Secretariat. The week-long programme, which runs from 23rd to 30th November, includes a series of activities such as conventions, open-air meetings, school visits, prison outreach, and a grand march against crime. These events underscore the growing community buy-in to Prime Minister Dr. Terrance Drew’s public health approach to addressing crime and violence.

During a recent statement, Prime Minister Drew highlighted the importance of collaboration in creating lasting solutions.

“The only way to truly end crime and violence is through cooperation as a united front. We cannot just rely on harsher laws and police enforcement. This is a societal issue that needs a societal response,” he stated, reaffirming his government’s commitment to fostering partnerships for meaningful change.

Family Counsellor Alicia Collins, a key member of the Citizen Security Task Force, echoed this sentiment.

“Through initiatives like the Community Conversations, we’ve been able to hear directly from residents about their concerns and hopes for a safer future. These conversations have been instrumental in building trust and crafting targeted interventions,” she said.

The campaign’s emphasis on community engagement reflects its success so far, as citizens and residents from all walks of life rally behind the government’s vision for a safer Federation. From conventions in churches to town hall meetings and school outreaches, the activities demonstrate a shared determination to address the root causes of crime.

This nationwide movement shows that the government’s innovative approach—prioritising prevention, rehabilitation, and collaboration—is resonating with the people. The active participation of faith-based organisations, schools, and community leaders signals a renewed sense of partnership and purpose.

As the 90-Day Campaign progresses, the Government of St. Kitts and Nevis remains steadfast in its belief that sustainable solutions require the collective effort. The Unshackled Youth Wave 2024 and similar activities highlight the success of this strategy, paving the way for a safer St. Kitts and Nevis.
