Prime Minister Dr. Terrance Drew emphasised the critical importance of the rule of law in sustaining democracy and promoting societal progress during his address at the inaugural Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court (ECSC) Public Education Lecture Series on 12th November. Held under the theme “Justice Without Borders: The Legal Practitioner’s Perspective and the ECSC Reality,” the event brought together judicial leaders, legal professionals, and the general public to examine the transformative role of justice in contemporary society.
Dr. Drew underscored the indispensable relationship between the rule of law and democratic governance, describing it as the “fabric of a modern, thriving democracy.”
Citing Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., he remarked, “The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice,” reinforcing the universal significance of justice.
“The rule of law ensures that no individual or institution operates above the law,” Dr. Drew stated. “It provides the equity and structure required for governance, commerce, and social interactions to flourish. Without it, society descends into chaos.”
A Broader Understanding of Justice
The Prime Minister stressed the need for all citizens, not just legal professionals, to recognise the rule of law’s foundational role. “Every member of society must understand the law’s function, not only as a tool of governance, but as the cornerstone of fairness and equality,” he said.
Dr. Drew also praised the ECSC for its initiative in hosting public education lectures, which he believes will help demystify the legal system and empower citizens.
“When people are informed about the law, they are better equipped to contribute to societal development and ensure institutions are held accountable,” he added.
Technology and Justice
Acknowledging the ECSC’s efforts to embrace innovation, Dr. Drew noted advancements in technology as crucial to maintaining accessible and efficient justice systems. These innovations, he stated, align with his government’s Sustainable Island State Agenda, which prioritises equity and modernisation in governance.
Commitment to Justice
The Prime Minister reaffirmed his administration’s dedication to upholding justice as a core principle, ensuring public trust in governance and judicial processes. He called on legal practitioners to continue promoting transparency and fairness, urging the judicial system to reflect these ideals visibly in its operations.
“Justice must not only be done but must also be seen to be done,” Dr. Drew concluded, urging all stakeholders to play their part in strengthening democracy through an unwavering commitment to the rule of law.
The lecture series marked a significant milestone in bridging the gap between the judiciary and the public, fostering greater understanding and appreciation of justice’s vital role in societal progress.
