PM Drew: Major Development Projects Set to Transform St. Kitts and Nevis

Prime Minister Dr. Terrance Drew has unveiled a bold vision for St. Kitts and Nevis, highlighting a series of transformative projects aimed at driving economic growth, improving infrastructure, and enhancing citizens’ quality of life. Speaking during a media appearance on 16th November, 2024, Dr. Drew assured the nation that these projects are not merely concepts but fully prepared for implementation, promising significant advancements in healthcare, housing, agriculture, and renewable energy.

The prime minister spotlighted the upcoming Climate Smart Hospital, which will be the first of its kind in the Eastern Caribbean. This state-of-the-art facility, designed to integrate advanced medical technology with sustainable energy solutions, represents a cornerstone of the government’s strategy to strengthen healthcare delivery and climate resilience. Dr. Drew confirmed that engineering works, including critical soil testing, are already underway.

Housing Programme Expands to Meet Growing Demand

In a move to address the housing shortage, the government has completed 110 affordable homes through the National Housing Corporation (NHC). By the end of 2024, construction on an additional 100 homes is set to begin, offering relief to families across the Federation. This marks a substantial improvement compared to the performance of previous administrations.

“The progress we’ve made in housing reflects our commitment to the people. Secure and sustainable living environments are essential to achieving our broader development goals,” said Dr. Drew.

Agricultural Sector Boosted by Landmark Partnership

The agricultural sector is undergoing a major transformation through a partnership with Tabasco, enabling the cultivation of 100 acres of peppers for export. This initiative is expected to employ over 300 workers, creating a robust new revenue stream while strengthening food security.

“This is one of the most significant developments in agriculture since the sugar industry closed,” said the Prime Minister. “It diversifies our economy and ensures we remain resilient in the face of global challenges.”

Infrastructure and Renewable Energy on the Rise

The government is also tackling long-standing utility and infrastructure issues. Plans are in motion to upgrade the diesel plant and install desalination facilities to improve water and energy reliability. Roadworks are already improving accessibility in key areas such as St Peter’s, Newton Ground, and Buckleys.

Dr. Drew also hinted at significant announcements regarding renewable energy projects, including solar and wind energy solutions. These efforts align with the Sustainable Island State Agenda, a blueprint for positioning St. Kitts and Nevis as a regional leader in sustainability.

“Energy is at the heart of our development strategy. By embracing renewable solutions, we are cutting costs, reducing emissions, and securing a brighter, greener future for all citizens,” said the Prime Minister.

Commitment to Progress and Transparency

Dr. Drew closed by reaffirming the government’s commitment to transparency, accountability, and delivering meaningful results.

“These initiatives are not just ideas—they are signed, sealed, and ready for delivery. Our citizens deserve tangible progress, and that’s exactly what we’re delivering,” he said.

With these projects well underway, St. Kitts and Nevis is on track for a transformative era, reflecting the government’s unwavering dedication to creating opportunities and improving lives throughout the Federation.
