90-Day Campaign Against Crime & Violence Fosters Togetherness and Engagement in Newtown
The Community Conversations initiative, a key component of St. Kitts and Nevis’ 90-Day Campaign Against Crime and Violence, continues to inspire public engagement, uniting citizens, and fostering meaningful dialogue.
The brainchild of Prime Minister and Minister of National Security Dr. Terrance Drew, the 90-Day Campaign seeks to address violence and crime reduction from a public health perspective, addressing root causes while prioritising inclusive community involvement.
On 20th November 2024, the campaign reached Newtown, where a comprehensive walkthrough and consultation highlighted the programme’s objectives. Organised by the Citizen Security Secretariat, this event brought together the High Command of the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force (RSCNPF), including Commissioner James Sutton.
The Secretariat’s representatives and the police divided into four groups to engage directly with residents across Newtown. Residents warmly welcomed the team, interacting in an atmosphere marked by mutual understanding and respect.
Newtown’s diverse population, including a significant Hispanic community, benefitted from the presence of a Spanish translator, enabling effective engagement and ensuring every voice was heard.
The event also featured a Community Conversation session at the Newtown Community Centre, facilitated by Family Counsellor Alicia Collins and Public Health and National Security expert Hance Richards. These sessions allowed for in-depth discussions on concerns, ideas, and potential solutions, further enhancing the initiative’s inclusive approach.
Eartha Carey, Coordinator of the Citizen Security Secretariat, emphasised the importance of this collective effort: “Consulting every sector of society is essential for devising a comprehensive and enduring approach to citizen security. The insights gathered from these conversations, especially from underrepresented groups, are invaluable in creating solutions that serve all citizens of St. Kitts and Nevis.”
The campaign has already received acclaim for its impact, with active participation from political, church, sports, and community groups. It exemplifies the government’s commitment to reducing crime while fostering a united and resilient Federation.
As the 90-Day Campaign Against Crime and Violence nears its climax in December with the final national consultation, the Citizen Security Secretariat remains steadfast in its mission to build a safer St. Kitts and Nevis rooted in mutual respect, collaboration, and community-driven strategies.
