The Nevis Island Administration (NIA) is set to host a pivotal Youth Summit on Wednesday, 27th November 2024, at the Malcolm Guishard Recreational Park. Designed for high school students and youth organisation representatives, this one-day event aims to empower the island’s younger generation to tackle pressing issues such as climate change and crime prevention.
With participation from approximately 85 youth delegates, the summit will run from 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM, featuring expert presentations in the morning and collaborative activities in the afternoon. The event aligns with Nevis’ ongoing National 90-Day Campaign Against Crime and Violence, launched on 6th September 2024.
Focus on Key Challenges
The summit will delve into two critical areas:
- Climate Change: Exploring its local and global impacts while encouraging youth-led solutions.
- Citizen Security: Addressing the rise of crime and violence with practical strategies to foster safer communities.
Facilitators include Family Counsellor Alicia Collins and Public Health Specialist Hance Richards, both of whom previously led a community consultation on 14th November at Jessups Community Centre. The lively discussions during that event produced practical recommendations for addressing crime on the island.
Government Engagement
Premier Mark Brantley and other NIA ministers will join the summit at 3:00 PM to engage directly with participants, providing an opportunity for open dialogue between the youth and policymakers.
Part of a Larger Campaign
The summit builds on the success of the 90-Day Campaign, which has garnered widespread support across the Federation. By involving young people in solutions for climate resilience and public safety, the NIA aims to foster a generation equipped to lead Nevis into a sustainable and secure future.
This transformative initiative underscores Nevis’ commitment to empowering its youth while addressing the island’s most urgent challenges.
