The Federal Ministry of Health has announced a significant change in visiting hours for major healthcare facilities, effective 1st December 2024. Patients at the Joseph N. France General Hospital, Pogson Medical Centre, and Mary Charles Hospital can now welcome visitors daily from 2 pm. to 7 pm. This adjustment reflects the government’s commitment to improving healthcare accessibility and aligns with international standards.
Supporting Patient-Centred Care and Accreditation Goals
The extended visiting hours are part of broader efforts to enhance patient-centred care and strengthen family involvement in the recovery process.
Dr. Daveen Wilkin, Medical Chief of Staff at JNF General Hospital, highlighted the importance of this change.
“Family presence during recovery significantly improves patient outcomes. By extending visiting hours, we are creating greater opportunities for loved ones to support patients during hospitalisation,” she explained.
Dr. Jenson Morton, Director of Health Institutions, linked the policy to the Ministry’s goal of securing international healthcare accreditation.
“This is a tangible step in meeting global benchmarks of quality and accessibility. The extended hours underscore our dedication to delivering the highest level of care,” he said.
Emphasising Family Support in Recovery
Kerry Williams-Tuckett, Director of Institutional Nursing Services, acknowledged the vital role family members play in the healing process noting: “These new hours allow for deeper engagement between patients, families, and healthcare teams, fostering collaboration and trust.”
The Ministry of Health also recognised the emotional and mental challenges associated with hospitalisation.
Acting Permanent Secretary, Curtis Martin, stressed the compassionate approach behind the initiative.
“At the heart of this decision are our patients and their families. These extended hours provide meaningful opportunities for loved ones to bring comfort and reassurance, contributing to overall well-being.”
A Step Toward International Healthcare Standards
The new visiting hours are a key component of the ongoing accreditation process for St. Kitts and Nevis’ healthcare facilities. The ministry is encouraging the public to embrace the change, which is expected to enhance patient satisfaction and support the nation’s drive for excellence in healthcare delivery.
