Citizen Security Engages Spanish Community in Newtown to Address Crime and Violence
The Citizen Security Secretariat continues to strengthen its fight against crime and violence through inclusive community engagement. On Tuesday, November 26th, 2024, a Community Conversations session with the Spanish-speaking community in Newtown took place as part of the ongoing 90 Days Campaign Against Crime and Violence. The event saw active participation from local residents who were eager to contribute to building a safer and more cohesive society.
Public Health expert Hance Richards, along with Family Counsellor Alicia Collins, led the interactive dialogue.
Mr. Richards highlighted the critical role of collaboration in tackling crime, noting, “We cannot fight crime and violence in isolation. Every voice matters, and tonight’s turnout is a testament to the power of unity. Together, we can build a stronger, safer community for all.”
During the session, participants shared their concerns, suggestions, and hopes for safer neighbourhoods, creating a platform for open communication and mutual understanding. Many attendees expressed their gratitude for being involved in the campaign, calling it a significant step toward more harmonious interactions and empowerment within their community.
One participant remarked, We feel seen and valued. This effort to involve everyone, regardless of background, shows that Citizen Security is committed to unity and progress. We are ready to work hand in hand to make a difference.”
Yet another said, “Tonight’s session has given us hope. We see that our voices are being heard, and we are eager to contribute to creating a safer environment for our families.”
This engagement underscores Prime Minister Dr. Terrance Drew and his administration’s commitment to inclusivity and community-driven strategies in the fight against crime and all forms of violence.
As the 90-Day Campaign nears its end in December, the next phase, Beyond the 90 Days, will continue to build on this momentum. The Citizen Security Secretariat, which was launched in August 2024 to promote the safety and well-being of citizens, is energised by the success of the campaign, its first major undertaking.
By involving a diverse range of voices, the Dr. Terrance Drew-led government aims to create sustainable solutions for a safer St. Kitts and Nevis.
