Ministry of Education Hosts German-Led Workshop on Technical Vocational Skills

In a groundbreaking initiative to enhance technical vocational education, four experts from the Chamber of Crafts Flensburg, Germany, began a two-week training programme in St. Kitts and Nevis on 25th November, 2024. The training focuses on carpentry and electrical safety, targeting students from the Clarence Fitzroy Bryant College (CFBC), the Advanced Vocational Education Centre (AVEC), and private sector participants.

Facilitated by a partnership established through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Ministry of Education and the German Chamber, the initiative emphasises both theoretical and practical skills transfer. Dr. Kertney Thompson, CEO of the TVET Secretariat, explained that the programme is designed to foster capacity-building by integrating Germany’s highly advanced vocational methodologies into local training.

“Germany’s skilled workforce is a testament to the success of their TVET programmes. This collaboration enables us to incorporate those best practices into our education system,” Dr. Thompson remarked.

Director of AVEC, Eston Williams, reiterated the importance of TVET as a driver of economic growth, stressing the long-term benefits of equipping participants with industry-relevant skills for classroom application and the workplace.

On 29th November, Prime Minister Dr. Terrance Drew commended the German instructors, highlighting the roots of this partnership.

“This collaboration began in 2020, and seeing it come to fruition now is deeply gratifying. It’s a testament to our commitment to fostering expertise and innovation,” he noted.

The workshops, blending theoretical grounding with practical application, mark the initial phase of the MoU, with the aim of fostering sustainable skill development across the Federation. With growing international collaboration, the initiative sets a strong foundation for future advancements in technical education.
