The Government of St. Kitts and Nevis is taking a significant step towards sustainable land management with a comprehensive review of operations at the Conaree Landfill. A stakeholder consultation, held on 9th December 2024 at the Solid Waste Management Conference Room, explored innovative strategies to enhance landfill sustainability and align with global green economy standards.
This consultation is part of a six-month assessment initiated in July 2024, targeting the landfills on both St. Kitts and Nevis. The project is led by Professional Engineer and Director of Energy Consulting at Hatch, Robert Griesbach, with funding from the Canada-CARICOM Expert Deployment Mechanism (CCEDM). Griesbach, working in collaboration with the Ministry of Sustainable Development, Environment, Climate Action and Constituency Empowerment, and solid waste management authorities, is providing technical expertise to assess landfill operations comprehensively.
Ambitious Goals for Modern Waste Management
The initiative focuses on key areas such as:
- Operational Efficiency: Evaluating the current landfill structure and revenue generation models.
- Sustainability: Identifying methods to incorporate recycling and waste-to-energy opportunities.
- Training and Safety: Establishing enhanced health and safety standards and providing targeted training.
- Policy Enhancement: Strengthening inter-sector cooperation and addressing institutional limitations for improved performance monitoring.
Stakeholders also reviewed successful landfill management practices implemented in Barbados and Grand Cayman to gauge their applicability in St. Kitts and Nevis.
A Green Economy Vision
This technical assistance marks a pivotal step towards formulating a national waste management strategy. The strategy aims to support St. Kitts and Nevis in transitioning to a green economy, focusing on modernising waste management technologies, improving service delivery, and enhancing the sector’s economic viability.
A Broader Perspective for Progress
Griesbach’s role extends beyond landfill assessments, as he also facilitates dialogue among stakeholders to address overlapping issues and develop strategic solutions. This holistic approach includes fostering communication and visibility to accelerate progress in sustainable land management.
Looking Ahead
A follow-up workshop is scheduled for 10th December 2024 in Nevis, allowing stakeholders there to contribute to the broader discussion on advancing waste management practices.
With sustainability and innovation at the forefront, the Government of St. Kitts and Nevis remains committed to creating a cleaner, greener, and more resilient future for all citizens. This initiative not only addresses immediate waste management needs but also sets the foundation for long-term environmental stewardship.
