Prime Minister Dr. Terrance Drew, has issued a heartfelt appeal for road users to exercise extreme caution following two fatal traffic accidents in St. Kitts and Nevis in less than a week. These accidents, which have claimed the lives of multiple individuals and left several others seriously injured, have cast a shadow over the community as the festive season approaches.
In his statement on 11th December, 2024, Dr. Drew expressed his sorrow over the loss of life and urged the public to take personal responsibility for their safety on the roads.
“Our citizens and nationals are dear to us, and every life lost is a tragedy,” he said. “I want to take this opportunity to appeal to everyone, especially as we enter the festive season, to drive with due care and attention.”
A Call for Safe Driving During the Festive Season
Prime Minister Drew’s statement follows two serious accidents, which have prompted local police to issue a public advisory urging road users to drive responsibly. With Carnival and Christmas fast approaching, the Prime Minister highlighted the importance of staying vigilant and cautious during this time of increased road traffic.
“I urge everyone to enjoy the festivities, but to do so safely,” Dr. Drew continued. “Do not drink and drive. Do not smoke any substances and drive. Your life, and the lives of others, are precious. Let’s protect ourselves and each other.” The Prime Minister’s words serve as a reminder of the risks posed by reckless driving, particularly when substances like alcohol or drugs impair judgment.
Community Support and Solidarity
While addressing the nation, Dr. Drew also expressed his deepest condolences to the families and communities affected by these tragic accidents. “Let us come together as a community to support those families who are grieving. This is a difficult time for many, and we must show solidarity,” he said.
His message called on citizens to not only be mindful of their own safety but also to extend support to those impacted by the loss of life, reinforcing the importance of community during times of hardship.
A Shared Responsibility
Dr. Drew’s statement echoed a similar appeal made by the St. Kitts and Nevis Labour Party (SKNLP), which he leads, that also called on road users to exercise greater care, particularly as the country prepares for the busy festive season. The SKNLP emphasised the shared responsibility of all road users to ensure the safety of themselves, their families, and others.
As the country enters the holiday period, marked by celebrations such as Sugar Mas and Christmas, Dr. Drew’s call for responsible driving resonates strongly. “Let us enjoy the season, but let’s do so with caution. Drive with care and attention,” he concluded.
