The Government of St. Kitts and Nevis is setting the stage for the groundbreaking transformation of its healthcare system, with plans to digitise patient health records by 2025. This initiative aims to create an integrated and efficient platform for managing medical information, a long-overdue milestone for the nation.
In a media appearance on 10th December, 2024, Dr. Jenson Morton, Director of Health Institutions, highlighted the significance of this development, describing it as a “hallmark achievement” for the Federation. He detailed the historical context of the project, the challenges faced in previous attempts, and the renewed commitment to seeing it through to completion.
A Long-Awaited Shift to Modernisation
The journey towards digitisation began in 2006 with support from Taiwan, a long-standing diplomatic partner, however, the project faced hurdles, including insufficient infrastructure and limited buy-in from key stakeholders. A renewed attempt in 2016 encountered similar setbacks, leaving St. Kitts and Nevis among the few nations in the region still reliant on paper-based medical records.
“We are now behind compared to the rest of the region,” Dr. Morton admitted. “Most other islands have implemented some form of electronic health record system. For us, digitisation is critical not only for efficiency but also for achieving accreditation and improving overall patient care.”
Building the Framework for Success
To address the challenges that stalled earlier efforts, the Ministry of Health has upgraded its infrastructure, including the installation of a fibre-optic network provided by The Cable. The health system’s digital software, developed with Taiwan’s assistance, is undergoing updates to align with local needs and professional standards.
Dr. Morton outlined the implementation roadmap:
- Device Installation: Computers and tablets will be distributed across all hospitals, health centres, and other medical facilities.
- Training Programmes: Healthcare workers will receive extensive training on the new system, including inputting, retrieving, and managing patient data, as well as troubleshooting.
- Progressive Rollout: By the second quarter of 2025, the system is expected to be fully operational, enhancing the speed and accuracy of medical services.
Benefits for Patients and Healthcare Professionals
The new Electronic Health Record (EHR) system promises significant advantages. For patients, it ensures rapid access to their medical history during emergencies, reducing delays in diagnosis and treatment. Citizens will also play an active role by registering their information ahead of time to streamline future care.
Dr. Morton emphasised the system’s ability to minimise errors. “Issues related to illegible handwriting will be eliminated, and errors from typos will be far less common,” he said. “This system also accelerates the generation of medical reports, providing faster and more reliable service to patients.”
For healthcare professionals, the platform offers real-time access to critical patient data, supports informed decision-making, and simplifies administrative tasks. The incorporation of digital intelligence will enable seamless coordination between departments, improving overall service delivery.
Strengthening the Healthcare Sector
The digitisation project is part of a broader agenda to fortify healthcare services under the federation’s sustainable island state strategy. By adopting advanced technology, St. Kitts and Nevis is poised to modernise its health sector, aligning with global best practices while addressing local needs.
“This is not just about digitisation,” Dr. Morton explained. “It’s about building a system that supports efficiency, accessibility, and transparency in healthcare. It’s about ensuring that our citizens receive the best possible care, supported by accurate, up-to-date information.”
As the Ministry of Health pushes forward with this ambitious plan, the federation is set to achieve a significant milestone in its journey toward sustainable, technology-driven healthcare. The EHR system, once fully implemented, is expected to redefine how medical services are delivered, benefiting generations to come.
