“Housing Revolution Underway”: 20 Affordable Homes Begin Construction in Ottley’s

The government of St. Kitts and Nevis is making significant strides in addressing the nation’s housing demands, with the construction of 20 new homes in Ottley’s now in progress. This development, part of the government’s broader housing initiative, was announced during a site visit on 11th December 2024 by Prime Minister Dr. Terrance Drew and Minister of Housing Dr. Geoffrey Hanley, accompanied by representatives from the National Housing Corporation (NHC) and East Coast Housing Development Ltd.

Foundation of Progress

The housing development will feature 20 residential lots, offering a mix of two-bedroom and three-bedroom homes. Prime Minister Drew emphasised the transformative impact of this initiative, highlighting its dual role in fostering homeownership and stimulating economic growth.

“These homes are a tangible step in our housing revolution,” stated Dr. Drew. “It’s not just about providing affordable housing—it’s about creating opportunities, empowering communities, and boosting the local economy. Every foundation laid here represents a brighter future for families in Ottley’s.”

Minister Hanley echoed this sentiment, expressing pride in the government’s efforts to deliver on its promise of improved living conditions.

“We understand the importance of homeownership to our people,” he remarked. “This project in Ottleys is just one of many across the Federation, designed to ensure that affordable, quality housing becomes a reality for all citizens of St. Kitts and Nevis.”

Economic and Community Benefits

Beyond providing homes, the project is creating job opportunities for contractors, construction workers, and tradespeople, further strengthening the economy. Ambassador Leon Natta-Nelson highlighted the project’s significance to Constituency Number Seven, celebrating its potential to fulfil long-standing dreams of homeownership for many residents.

“This initiative has been a long time coming,” he noted. “For years, families in Ottley’s have yearned for the chance to own homes in their community. Thanks to the government’s commitment, that vision is now becoming a reality.”

Building Modern Communities

The project, spearheaded by East Coast Housing Development Ltd., is progressing steadily. Crews are currently completing the footing phase, with plans to transition to block laying and structural development in the coming weeks. Once completed, the homes will serve as part of a broader government agenda to modernise housing and enhance communities across the Federation.

“These homes are more than buildings,” said Ambassador Natta-Nelson. “They symbolise growth, stability, and a brighter future for the people of Ottley’s.”

Housing Revolution in Motion

The Ottley’s development is one chapter in the government’s nationwide housing strategy, which has delivered 112 homes since the Drew administration came to office in August 2022 – an achievement that far outpaces previous administrations.

“In just two and a half years, we have delivered more homes than ever before,” noted Dr. Hanley. “This progress is proof of our dedication to ensuring that every citizen has access to safe, affordable housing.”

Future projects are already in the pipeline for areas including Stapleton, Sandy Point, and Newton Ghaut, as the government continues its mission to create thriving, inclusive communities.

A Vision for the Future

Prime Minister Drew reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to ensuring that every citizen can own a home in a community that promotes well-being and prosperity.

“This is about more than housing,” he declared. “It’s about empowering our people, strengthening communities, and building a Federation where every citizen can thrive. The work happening in Ottley’s is just the beginning of a larger vision for sustainable development and inclusive growth.”
