The government of St. Kitts and Nevis is delivering on its promise to improve housing solutions, with a new four-unit apartment complex in East Basseterre nearing completion. Spearheaded by the National Housing Corporation (NHC), the project aims to replace derelict properties with modern, functional housing that enhances the community’s living standards.
NHC General Manager Jonelle Rawlins provided an update during a site visit on 11th December, sharing the progress made so far.
“We’ve almost completed the septic and soak-away systems, with just a few final touches remaining. By the new year, four families will be moving into this spacious, fully tiled, two-bedroom building,” she said.
Each unit boasts a functional layout, including built-in cupboards, an innovative indoor drying area for clothes, and rooftop water tanks to ensure a reliable water supply.
Built By the Community, For the Community
A defining feature of this project is the involvement of East Basseterre residents in its construction. Local expertise and craftsmanship have played a pivotal role in bringing the apartment complex to life, fostering a strong sense of ownership and pride among community members.
“This building has been constructed entirely by people from East Basseterre,” Rawlins highlighted. “It’s truly a community-driven project, and we’re excited to see it completed soon. After this, we’ll move on to two additional units further down East Street.”
A Commitment to Revitalisation
The NHC’s approach is to revitalise neglected areas and replace dilapidated properties with modern, liveable spaces. By systematically targeting rundown sites, the corporation seeks to strengthen communities and improve living conditions.
This project reflects the broader vision of the St. Kitts-Nevis government to invest in housing solutions that meet the needs of its people while fostering economic opportunities for local contractors and workers.
As the first families prepare to move into their new homes in early 2025, the East Basseterre apartment complex stands as a symbol of progress and community collaboration, delivering tangible results that directly benefit the people of St. Kitts and Nevis.
