The Agri Night Market, a standout initiative by the Ministry of Agriculture in St. Kitts and Nevis, continues to earn widespread praise for its role in fostering local entrepreneurship, enhancing community spirit, and showcasing the nation’s vibrant agricultural and artisanal sectors. With the festive Christmas-themed edition set for Wednesday, 18th December, vendors and shoppers alike are gearing up for a night of commerce and cultural pride.
The market, which will take place at the Basseterre Public Market on Bay Road from 5:00pm to midnight, offers an interactive space where farmers, artisans, and agro-producers can connect directly with the public.
Vendors in particular are e nthusiastic as many credit the event with having a transformative impact on their businesses.
A Platform for Passion and Connection
For retired principal and market vendor Avril Archibald, the Agri Night Market has been an avenue to rediscover her passion. Now specialising in floral arrangements and household items, Archibald recently explained in an interview how the market has given her a new sense of purpose and connection.
“I come to the market every day except Sunday,” she explained. “For me, creating floral arrangements is therapeutic. During my time here, I often reconnect with former students, which adds an extra layer of joy to my experience.”
Archibald encourages continued government support for the initiative, noting its dual benefits for vendors and consumers. “The Agri Night Market motivates vendors and provides the public with access to a wide variety of fresh vegetables and other goods.”
Driving Innovation and Engagement
The night market also has great appeal to the younger generation. Fifteen-year vendor Fayola Bradshaw in one such person.
“It’s an exciting moment, with lots of people coming out to support,” she said, reflecting on the energy and engagement the event generates.
Bradshaw has also embraced innovation, using the 869ToGo delivery platform to expand her reach and maintain steady sales during quieter periods.
“The online platform gives vendors like me a chance to sell our goods virtually while allowing customers easy access to fresh produce from the comfort of their homes,” she noted.
Celebrating Creativity and Local Craftsmanship
For artisan Shermel Thomas of Shermel’s Natural Touch, the market is not just a sales opportunity but a celebration of her creativity. Her handmade jewellery, crafted from unique materials such as lava stones, attracts both locals and visitors.
“The Agri Night Market benefits me immensely. It allows me to promote and advertise my work while enjoying the ambiance and community spirit. Events like these make all the difference in showcasing local talent,” she shared.
