The Federal Government of St. Kitts and Nevis, through its transformative ELEVATE Programme, has taken another bold step toward rehabilitation and family healing with the launch of Heartfelt Moments. This groundbreaking initiative is providing incarcerated parents the opportunity to reconnect with their children, fostering emotional bonds that aim to heal the scars of separation and inspire hope for the future.
A Day of Reconnection and Healing
On the programme’s inaugural day 17th December, 22 children – 16 boys and six girls ranging from two months to 17 years old – shared a heartwarming day with their fathers. For many, it was the first time in years they could embrace their fathers without the barriers of prison walls. The experience was deeply moving, as fathers and children wiped away each other’s tears, creating cherished memories.
“This has given them a memory they will carry for life,” shared one caregiver, emphasising the profound impact of seeing fathers outside the confines of uniforms and shackles. Families engaged in a variety of activities, including games, karaoke, and shared meals, creating an atmosphere of joy and connection.
Professional photo sessions were another highlight, giving children and fathers keepsakes of their reunion. “It’s been so long since I’ve seen my father, let alone taken a photo with him,” one child shared, expressing their gratitude.
Supporting Rehabilitation Through Family Bonds
Heartfelt Moments is designed to support the rehabilitation process by strengthening family relationships. Fathers expressed their love through creative outlets such as poetry, song, and art, while children responded with drawings and heartfelt words. Rehabilitation Officer Virgil Hodge and Sgt. Tracy O’Loughlin of His Majesty’s Prison played pivotal roles along side the ELEVATE team in ensuring the day’s success.
Ministerial and community stakeholders, including the Rotary Club and the Commissioner of Prisons, collaborated with ELEVATE to ensure the programme’s smooth execution. Permanent Secretary Naeemah Hazelle highlighted the government’s public health approach to crime and violence prevention.
“By fostering strong family bonds, we address some of the root causes of crime and violence, promoting emotional healing and breaking cycles of trauma,” she said.
A Vision to Break Cycles of Trauma
Alicia Collins, Family Counsellor and the mastermind behind Heartfelt Moments, underscored the programme’s mission to disrupt generational cycles of trauma.
“Children of incarcerated parents are at higher risk of entering the criminal justice system themselves,” she noted. “With initiatives like this, we are breaking those cycles, ensuring our children have the support they need to thrive. We’re also reducing recidivism by giving fathers the emotional tools to heal and transform.”
Collins’s sentiments were echoed by fathers, many of whom vowed to become better role models. “No words can express how grateful I am for this programme,” one father said. “It’s inspired me to grow and be the father my child deserves.”
Looking Ahead
Heartfelt Moments is just the beginning of a year-long journey designed to meet the emotional and psychological needs of children, caregivers, and incarcerated parents. The programme is aligned with Prime Minister Dr. Terrance Drew’s vision for tackling crime and rehabilitation through holistic, family-centred strategies.
In recognising the efforts behind the inaugural event, heartfelt thanks were extended to all partners, including the staff of His Majesty’s Prison, the Prime Minister’s Office, and dedicated volunteers.
Building Brighter Futures
Heartfelt Moments represents a transformative step in building brighter futures for families across St. Kitts and Nevis. By focusing on rehabilitation, reconnection, and emotional healing, the government continues to demonstrate its commitment to creating a society where every child can feel loved and supported.
