Prime Minister Dr. Terrance Drew led a solemn moment of silence on Monday, 16th December, ahead of the 2025 Budget Address to honour the seven individuals who tragically lost their lives in two devastating vehicular accidents within one week. Dr. Drew extended his sympathies to the grieving families and recognised the profound impact these events have had on the St. Kitts and Nevis community.
Dr. Drewr had earlier expressed his profound sadness at both tragedies and implored motorists to comply with traffic laws.
The accidents occurred on 6th December and 11th December, claiming the lives of two individuals in the first incident and five in the second. The latter, which occurred near the Brimstone Hill area, has prompted an active investigation by the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force. Authorities have called on the public to provide any information that could assist in determining the cause of the crash.
The call for greater accountability by all traffic stakeholders resonates even more now, as this is the Carnival period in St. Kitts—a time for many festive events and increased road activity.
Commissioner of Police James Sutton also expressed condolences to the victims’ families and underscored the importance of adhering to traffic laws to prevent such tragedies. Highlighting the dangers of reckless driving and speeding, the Commissioner announced increased road safety measures, including more patrols, speed checks, and stricter enforcement of penalties for violations.
The Commissioner emphasised that road safety is a shared responsibility and urged all road users—motorists, passengers, and pedestrians—to exercise care and good judgement. He assured grieving families of thorough investigations into the accidents and pledged continued support during their time of loss.
Beyond road safety, the Commissioner reminded citizens to remain vigilant in crime prevention efforts, secure their properties, and foster community cooperation. He reaffirmed the police force’s commitment to public safety and called for collective action to build a safer, more harmonious St. Kitts and Nevis.
The tragic events are a sobering reminder of the consequences of neglecting road safety. Authorities and leaders alike hope to honour the memory of those lost by fostering greater awareness and accountability among all citizens.
