Government To Expand Whole-of-Society Approach to Combat Crime

The government of St. Kitts and Nevis has reaffirmed its commitment to fostering long-term safety and security by expanding the strategies introduced during its successful 90-Day Campaign Against Violence and Crime. Launched in September 2024, the campaign united public, private, and civil society stakeholders in a collaborative effort to tackle the root causes of crime, laying the groundwork for evidence-based solutions.

Beyond the 90 Days: Building Safer Communities Together

Senator Isalean Phillip, announced that the government, through its Citizen Security Secretariat, will continue to champion a “whole-of-society approach” to crime prevention and other key policy initiatives. Speaking during the 2025 Budget Debate on 17th December, Senator Phillip emphasised the importance of partnerships in achieving sustainable solutions.

“In order for us to address violence and crime sustainably, we must work in partnership. People, programming, partnerships—these pillars only succeed when communities collaborate. We must rebuild the compassionate and caring communities we once had,” she stated.

Highlighting the comprehensive nature of the Citizen Security strategy, Minister Phillip noted that it goes beyond traditional national security measures.

“Citizen security is about more than justice and punishment; it focuses on individual well-being and collective safety. It’s a call for all of us to take responsibility for ensuring we care for each other,” she explained.

Collaborative Efforts for Social Development

Phillip, who co-chaired the taskforce leading 90-Day Campaign alongside Prime Minister Dr. Terrance Drew, pledged continued meaningful engagement with stakeholders to sustain the momentum achieved. Phillip noted that the Citizen Security Secretariat, supported by her ministries, will prioritise programmes and interventions aimed at promoting human and social development, with a strong focus on people-centred solutions.

“I want to reassure the public of the commitment from the Ministries of Social Development and Gender Affairs, Youth Empowerment, Ageing and Disabilities,” she said. “Our focus remains on driving community and human development through partnerships and targeted interventions.”

These partnerships will span government ministries, community organisations, and other key agencies, reinforcing the collaborative spirit that underpinned the success of the 90-Day Campaign.
