MP Duggins: Government Investing Millions in Sports Facilities

The government of St. Kitts and Nevis has made significant strides in revitalising the nation’s premier sporting facilities, investing millions to prepare for international events and provide enhanced training environments for local athletes. The announcement was made by the Minister of Sports, Samal Duggins, during the 2025 Budget Debate on 18th December, 2024.

Revitalising National Sports Infrastructure

The Constituency 4 Member of Parliament outlined the urgent need for intervention, noting that many of the island’s sporting venues were in a state of neglect when the Labour Party assumed office in 2022. Years of underinvestment had left these facilities in disrepair, limiting opportunities for athletes and reducing the nation’s appeal as a host for international competitions.

A key element of the revitalisation effort is the Kim Collins Athletic Stadium, where a comprehensive upgrade began in July 2023. The $1.9 million project includes an overhaul of the electrical and plumbing systems, steel frame repainting, new spectator seating, and replacing old dry wall with durable concrete structures. Additionally, a state-of-the-art track is being installed at a cost of $3.8 million, excluding civil work required to prepare the site.

Meanwhile, the Warner Park Cricket Stadium has undergone critical upgrades. The lighting systems were enhanced, and a modern jumbotron was procured for over $730,000.00. Minister Duggins highlighted that the previous administration had been warned about the obsolescence of the outdated screen but failed to act, leaving the current government to address the issue.

A Vision for Sports Development

Duggins reaffirmed the government’s dedication to sports development, emphasising the broader impact of these upgrades. “These investments are about more than just improving facilities—they are about creating opportunities for our athletes and communities,” he stated.

He also stressed the importance of fostering a safe and comfortable environment for both training and competition. The government plans to expand its modernisation programme to other sporting venues across the country, ensuring that all citizens can enjoy high-quality sports facilities.

Aiming for Global Recognition

The revamped facilities will position St. Kitts and Nevis as a contender to host international sporting events, which could bring significant economic and cultural benefits to the Federation. Moreover, local athletes will have access to improved resources, enabling them to compete at higher levels on the global stage.

As the government continues to prioritise sports, these investments signal a commitment to nurturing talent, strengthening communities, and enhancing the Federation’s international reputation.
