Prime Minister Dr. Terrance Drew has renewed his call for heightened caution among motorists and pedestrians during the Carnival and Christmas season. The appeal comes in the wake of yet another tragic road fatality, bringing the total number of traffic-related deaths in December to a concerning eight.
The most recent victim, 29-year-old Dr. Simoneth Williams, a Cuba-trained physician, lost her life on Friday, 20th December. Dr. Williams succumbed to her injuries shortly after being rushed to the Joseph N. France General Hospital. Prime Minister Drew extended heartfelt condolences to her grieving family and community, reflecting on her recent induction into the medical profession.
“Although getting confirmed as a medical doctor is one of the most tedious civil service processes, it was my privilege to sign and confirm all documents, officially ushering her into the medical profession and starting her journey as a medical doctor. Deepest condolences to her mother, the rest of the family, and her community,” said Dr. Drew, who specialises in internal medicine.
According to the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force, preliminary investigations revealed that Dr. Williams was struck by a vehicle while walking along the Island Main Road in New Road, near the fencing of the Robert L. Bradshaw International Airport’s runway. The incident occurred between 11:00 PM and 12:00 AM on 20th December. Investigations are ongoing to uncover the circumstances surrounding the tragic accident.
Dr. Williams’ death follows two earlier catastrophic accidents this month. On 6th December, two young peopl were killed in a crash on the F. T. Williams Highway, and on 11th December, a horrific accident near Brimstone Hill claimed five lives. The eight road fatalities recorded this month represent the highest number reported in a single month in recent history, prompting urgent calls for stricter road safety adherence.
As Carnival and Christmas celebrations continue, Prime Minister Drew stressed the need for vigilance and responsibility from all road users. “These festivities should not become a time of sorrow for families. Let us prioritise safety and exercise caution to prevent further loss of life,” he urged.
In response to the alarming trend, authorities have intensified road safety campaigns and increased enforcement measures in an effort to curtail further tragedies. The government remains committed to working closely with law enforcement and the public to promote safer roads for all.
