SKNNCC Denies Gag Order Ahead of Senior Calypso Monarch Final

The St. Kitts and Nevis National Carnival Committee (SKNNCC) has strongly refuted allegations of imposing a gag order on Calypsonians ahead of the eagerly awaited Senior Calypso Monarch Finals, set for 27th December at Carnival Village. The controversy arose following the introduction of a Calypso policy, distributed to finalists for their signature, which some claimed was directed at a particular performer.

In an official statement, the SKNNCC firmly dismissed the accusations, reiterating its unwavering support for freedom of speech and the critical role of Calypso as a voice of the people.

The committee stated: “There is no ‘gag order’ imposed on participating Calypsonians. The SKNNCC firmly upholds the principle of freedom of speech, particularly in relation to all national carnival events.”

Clarifying the Policy

The dispute stems from a clause within the existing Calypso policy, which requires participants to respect both the audience and judges while maintaining a standard of good taste. During a meeting held on 20th December, where the performance order was drawn, Calypso finalists raised questions about the interpretation of this clause. In response, the committee introduced an addendum to the policy, aiming to provide clarity and context.

The SKNNCC emphasised that the clause is not intended to suppress artistic expression but rather to ensure a respectful and inclusive atmosphere for all participants and stakeholders.

“Our primary aim is to encourage creative expression while ensuring that all performances exhibit a level of respect for all individuals,” the statement read.

Fostering Dialogue and Creativity

The committee reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Calypsonians in expressing their artistry while maintaining an open dialogue. It also expressed gratitude for the input of both performers and the public, acknowledging the importance of collaboration in enhancing the carnival experience.

As excitement grows for the Carib Senior Calypso Monarch Finals, the SKNNCC is encouraging widespread public support for the performers, whose talent and creativity are central to showcasing the cultural richness and tradition of Calypso.
