Drew Administration Doubles Down on Citizen Security in 2025 Budget

Prime Minister Dr. Terrance Drew has reinforced his administration’s commitment to tackling crime and ensuring public safety through a comprehensive approach outlined in the 2025 Budget Address. With a marked reduction in firearm-related homicides and significant advancements in law enforcement strategies, the government is setting its sights on creating safer communities across the Federation.

“Even one homicide in our country is one too many,” Dr. Drew declared, extending condolences to families affected by violent crime. He emphasised that combating crime requires an all-of-society approach, urging collaboration among families, schools, civil society, and law enforcement to address the root causes of violence.

A Milestone in Crime Reduction
The 90-Day Campaign Against Violence and Crime, launched in September 2024, has delivered remarkable results. Reported crimes dropped by 19% during the campaign period, with incidents declining from 306 in the second quarter to 247 in the third quarter of 2024. Notably, firearm-related homicides saw a dramatic 66% decrease, with only three such incidents recorded compared to an alarming average of three per month prior to the initiative.

“These results speak volumes about the progress we are making in safeguarding our nation,” Dr. Drew stated, noting the collaborative efforts of political parties, community groups, and law enforcement agencies.

Investing in Technology and Security
In a bid to stay ahead of evolving threats, the Drew administration plans to enhance technological capabilities within law enforcement. Measures include:

  • Upgrading the national CCTV network with fibre-optic technology to improve image capture and real-time surveillance.
  • Expanding the use of drones for around-the-clock aerial monitoring.
  • Establishing a Coastal Radar System in collaboration with the United States Regional Maritime Awareness Capability team to combat illegal activities along the Federation’s coastline.

Additionally, cybersecurity efforts will be bolstered with artificial intelligence for predictive policing and advanced tools for crime prevention.

Youth Engagement and Community Outreach
Recognising the role of youth engagement in preventing crime, the government continues to invest in programmes that equip young people with essential skills. The ELEVATE Programme, a flagship initiative, has helped at-risk individuals transform their lives, with many participants now running successful businesses.

Other initiatives include the annual Crime Intervention Summer Soccer Camp and the Sea Cadet Programme, which provide mentorship and life skills to hundreds of young people. “Our youth are the cornerstone of our future. We must empower them to make positive contributions to society,” Dr. Drew asserted.

Addressing Substance Abuse
Acknowledging the toll of substance abuse on small island states, the administration has implemented a National Drug Policy to prevent and mitigate its effects. Training for frontline workers has begun, equipping them to identify and address substance abuse in communities.

Border Security Enhancements
The government has also prioritised border security, introducing a digitally readable e-passport that incorporates biometric data to prevent fraud and enhance traveller processing. This first-of-its-kind initiative in the region underscores the administration’s focus on modernising immigration systems.

A Safer Future
Dr. Drew’s Budget Address underscored the Labour administration’s unwavering dedication to citizen security. “Through targeted action, collective effort, and a commitment to tackling the root causes of crime, we are building a safer and more inclusive Federation,” he affirmed.

As the government implements its 2025 agenda, citizens and residents can anticipate continued progress towards a secure and prosperous future.
