USVI: Cement truck driver dies in Smith Bay accident

A cement truck driver died Friday morning after his vehicle plunged 200-300 feet down a hillside in Smith Bay, St Thomas.

The incident occurred around 9:30 am on January 3, 2025.

Liston Pickering, an employee of Heavy Material LLC, lost control while reversing uphill with a full load after his truck’s rear tire struck a large rock.

The vehicle flipped multiple times before coming to rest down the embankment.

Emergency responders from VIFEMS and St. Thomas Rescue accessed the scene, confirming Pickering’s death at 10:12 am.

The Motor Carrier Unit is assisting with the ongoing investigation.
