The Prime Minister’s Annual New Year’s Gala, held on 4th January 2025, set the tone for a transformative year ahead, with keynote speaker Raheemah Abdulaleem delivering a powerful address on the intersection of sustainability and prosperity.
Under the theme “Building Prosperity Through Sustainability,” Abdulaleem, Special Assistant to the President of the United States and General Counsel in the White House, praised St. Kitts and Nevis for its potential to become a global model for sustainable development. She highlighted the Federation’s unique ability to address climate challenges while fostering inclusive economic growth, emphasising that “prosperity and sustainability are not separate goals—they are deeply interconnected.”
A Blueprint for Sustainable Development
During her address, Abdulaleem introduced actionable steps through the creative acronyms S.T.K.I.T.T.S. and N.E.V.I.S., which outlined principles such as valuing cultural and natural heritage, supporting renewable energy, and investing in eco-friendly industries.
“Through this lens, St. Kitts and Nevis will demonstrate how it can make a big impact by integrating sustainability into economic and social progress,” she stated.
She stressed that sustainability goes beyond environmental preservation, describing it as the foundation for long-term prosperity. “True prosperity transcends economic metrics; it is about health, education, equity, and opportunity,” she added.
Reflecting on St. Kitts and Nevis’ leadership in renewable energy and green initiatives, Abdulaleem lauded the nation’s ongoing efforts as an inspiring model for other small island states.
A Call to Action for 2025
As St. Kitts and Nevis embarks on 2025, dubbed the ‘Year of Recovery,’ Ms. Abdulaleem urged citizens to embrace their roles as stewards of the environment and drivers of innovation. She called for collective action to ensure that sustainability and prosperity coexist, highlighting equity, collaboration, and creativity as key components of progress.
“Together, St. Kitts and Nevis will show how sustainability and prosperity can coexist. Economic growth uplifts, creativity inspires, and collaboration unites us all,” she affirmed in her closing remarks.
Celebrating Progress and Resilience
Hosted by Prime Minister Terrance Drew and his wife, Diani Prince-Drew, the gala served as a platform to celebrate the Federation’s achievements while renewing the national commitment to building a stronger, more prosperous future. The event brought together government leaders, dignitaries, and citizens to reflect on past accomplishments and reaffirm a collective vision for sustainable development.
The keynote speech by Ms. Abdulaleem resonated as a call for action, inspiring attendees to harness the nation’s strengths to create a future where sustainability and prosperity go hand in hand.
As St. Kitts and Nevis moves forward, the principles outlined at the gala serve as a guiding light for achieving transformative progress in 2025 and beyond.
