The Government of Belize announced yesterday that cattle farmers affected by Tropical Storm Sara will receive USD 100,000 in support through a new initiative launched by the National Emergency Management Organization (NEMO) and the Belize Livestock Producers’ Association (BLPA).
The funding, provided by the Embassy of the Republic of China (Taiwan), was officially presented at a ceremony in Belmopan. Ambassador Lily Li-Wen Hsu handed over the cheque to Amalia Mai, Chief Executive Officer of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade.
The initiative targets farmers in the Belize River Valley and Crooked Tree regions, where November’s Tropical Storm Sara caused severe flooding that destroyed pastures and resulted in livestock losses.
The aid package includes immediate relief in the form of emergency feed supplies, as well as longer-term solutions.
As part of the program, 200 farmers will receive one-acre water-resistant pastures using Mombasa grass. The project also includes training in pasture establishment, veterinary health, and silage production to help farmers better prepare for future natural disasters.
Minister of Blue Economy and Disaster Risk Management Andre Perez emphasized the initiative’s importance for food security, describing it as “an investment in our farmers, their families, and our country’s food security.”
The project aims to enhance livestock health and productivity while supporting sustainable agricultural practices in Belize’s farming communities.
