PM Drew Condemns False Crime Statistics Amid Positive Trends

Minister of National Security, Prime Minister Dr. Terrance Drew, has confronted those responsible for fabricated crime statistics circulating on social media, calling for a united focus on celebrating the significant decline in crime in St. Kitts and Nevis.

The official 2024 data, confirmed by the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force, highlights a significant 70% reduction in homicides over the last quarter of the year, showcasing the success of proactive measures in fostering public safety, including the 90-Day Campaign Against Crime and Violence.

Speaking on Tuesday, Dr. Drew expressed his frustration at the spread of misleading information, which he described as harmful to the Federation’s progress.

“There are people out there who seem to want murders to happen,” Dr. Drew said. “Can you imagine people online trying to say we have more homicides than we actually had? Inventing numbers to spread negativity about St. Kitts and Nevis? This kind of false narrative does nothing but harm our image and the morale of our people.”

Celebrating Crime Reduction Achievements

The prime minister highlighted the success of the 90-Day Campaign Against Crime and Violence, which began in September 2024. The initiative, which focused on addressing the root causes of criminal behaviour through community engagement, has been credited with reducing firearm-related homicides and other violent crimes.

Participants cooperate during a community consultation in Nevis during the 90-Day Campaign Against Crime and Violence.

“I want to thank the security forces and everyone involved in the campaign,” Dr. Drew said. “Your efforts have brought significant relief to our people and have shown that progress is possible when we work together.”

The Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force corroborated the Prime Minister’s statements, reporting dramatic decreases in shootings and homicides. These improvements, particularly involving young people, mark a pivotal moment for the Federation’s safety and security.

A Call to Reject Misinformation

Dr. Drew urged citizens to reject the spread of falsehoods and instead focus on the positive strides being made. He expressed disbelief at the attempts to discredit the Federation by fabricating crime statistics, calling it a disservice to the country’s ongoing progress.

“Our young people are choosing life over death,” he said. “When they make this choice, it should be celebrated, not overshadowed by lies and negativity.”

The Prime Minister also criticised individuals and entities spreading misinformation, stressing the importance of unity and truth in building a safer, more prosperous future for St. Kitts and Nevis.

Promising Trends in Public Safety

The Federation’s improved crime statistics reflect the success of collaborative efforts between law enforcement, community organisations, and government-led initiatives. The 90-Day Campaign exemplifies the impact of targeted intervention programs in reducing violence and promoting public safety.

With these results, Dr. Drew reaffirmed his government’s commitment to maintaining and expanding strategies that prioritise the well-being of all citizens.

“Let us continue to choose life and work together for a brighter, safer St. Kitts and Nevis,” he concluded.
